Course Description: Opioid use disorders are at epidemic levels in the United Sates. Medication assisted treatment is the most effective treatment for opioid use disorders. Buprenorphine is approved for treatment in office-based settings. Buprenorphine can only be prescribed by physicians who complete an approved, standardized 8 hour training course as outlined in the Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000. Legislation to permit buprenorphine prescribing by PA’s and NP’s is currently being finalized.

Objectives: Upon completion of this training the participants will:

Have the training to apply for a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine

Identify and assess patients who are appropriate for buprenorphine

Have specific knowledge concerning the use of buprenorphine to manage opioid use disorder

Discuss the psychiatric and medical co-morbidities associated with opioid use disorders
