The Brien Center Announces Workforce Adjustments to Support Long-Term Sustainability

PITTSFIELD, MA — November 19, 2025 — The Brien Center, Berkshire County’s largest nonprofit provider of behavioral health and substance use services, has made adjustments impacting a small number of positions as part of efforts to strengthen the organization’s long-term sustainability.

“These were extremely difficult decisions, and we recognize the impact they have on our staff, their colleagues, and our community,” said Diana Knaebe, President and CEO. “We are deeply grateful for the service and dedication of all team members affected, and our focus on delivering essential services to the community remains unwavering.”

Founded in 1920, The Brien Center has served Berkshire County for over a century, expanding from addressing basic mental health needs to providing a comprehensive range of behavioral health and addiction services. Renamed in 2003 to honor former Executive Director Ray Brien, the agency now serves approximately 9,000 individuals each year.

These adjustments come as the behavioral health sector faces reduced state and federal support, rising costs, and increasing demand for services. Providers nationwide, including The Brien Center, are navigating these pressures while striving to maintain access to essential care.

In partnership with our Board, we made these difficult decisions to protect the long-term stability of The Brien Center and ensure that essential behavioral health and addiction services remain available to the people of Berkshire County—today and in the years ahead,” said Richard Wilson, Chief Finance and Administrative Officer. “As we move forward, we are strengthening our financial position through revenue growth, operational efficiencies, and continued advocacy so that our critical programs can continue to serve the community.”

The Brien Center relies on community support to continue its vital work. Community members can help by spreading awareness of the organization’s programs, or making a financial contribution. Every act of support helps ensure high-quality care for those who need it most.
